Dungeon & Hero

Dungeon & Hero is a RPG by Chillingo Ltd. $2.99

Dungeon & Hero is what I see as in the 2nd Tier price range of RPG's at $5 but could easily be sold for more. It is currently at the sale price of $2.99. This game is similar to Chronicles of Inotia in some ways. It is also better than Inotia in some places but also worse in others. This game really brings the old school feel to the game, unlike the newer console version of Inotia. There are three characters to choose from to save the Empire from destruction. You can start your adventure with a sword bearing Knight, Bow and Arrow shooting Elf or a magical Wizardress. The game as other RPG's involve alot of grinding, quest doings and button mashing. The last one is more obvious in this game as you have the attack button and choose when to attack.

I'm not really a fan of 'old school graphics'. The way I see it is that if you have all these tools and great consoles, then why make it look like it is from 20 years ago? I would rather graphics like Inotia which are at GBA standard at least. I can understand why they do it, and Dungeon & Hero is one of the only games with these graphics which I like. There are a few icons and such that are really pixellated, but generally this game is great graphics wise. The fact I like this the most is that there is a fair amount of detail put into everything, not just green trees and grey rocks scattered everywhere. The controls I find quite annoying. There are small arrows which you must tap or hold to move your character. I found a way to just touch the screen and move that direction but other than that it is quite hard. I really liked the tap where you wanted to go option in Inotia, and haven't found a better substitute for that in this game sadly.

The soundtrack in this game is what I expected. Nice easy music to listen to that changes as you change your surroundings. Even though it repeats itself a bit, there is no complaining coming from me. There are some fighting sound effects, but not much I found. This is a game to keep the sound turned on for.

As with any RPG this game is about grinding. There are quests in the game which help you achieve this. Unlike the ones in Chronicles of Inotia they are more defined and just say stuff like kill x amount of these and y amount of those. Each level that you get you get some upgrade points to put onto your stats, and every 8 levels gives you a new skill. The story behind the game (From the knights perspective anyway) is that he wants to join the army to fight for the empire and starts off to prove himself for it. The game is quite a challenge to begin with, and if you aren't careful the cute porcupines will be killing you with ease. One thing I didn't like in the game was that at the beginning nothing actually came and attacked you, they only attack once you strike. This means you have free roam of a place, almost like you are invisible. The different areas that you can go to have slightly more meaning than in Inotia, as they are connected and not joined by randomly placed Transport pads. The game is pretty basic and hardly any knowledge of how to play these games are needed. Multiple games can be saved at once with three slots for the whole family.

This game will take a long time to finish, and has alot of replayability with multiple characters to play the game through with. This game is right up there with Inotia and should be priced higher than it is. At $2.99 this game is an absolute steal and I would recommend that you buy it. Another great game developed by CH Games

Bike Or Die 2 - Physics Bike Simulator

Bike or Die 2 is a bike simulation game by Chillingo Ltd. $6.99

Think of buying everlasting fun for just $6.99 and you have this game. I mean, what else on the App Store gives you over 2,500 levels for you to play? Even though Lux Dlx takes a while to play, they only have 100 or so maps. This game is so fun and addictive. Doing a bit of research I found that this is a PDA/Cell Phone game originally, but this reminds me of some PC games that I have played on Tea Games. There are 14 pre-loaded level packs on the game with about 200 levels to complete, so it takes a while before you even need to download more packs. New levels in each pack are only unlocked if one track in the last two levels before it was completed. As you find out later it isn't as easy as it seems. As only the second type of game like this that I have seen, the first being Jelly Car, it is easily the best and if challengers come I doubt they will topple the greatness of Bike Or Die 2.

This game is simple, but effective graphics wise. Your rider is available to be customized in many ways and the tracks are bright and work well. If you download some of the 2500 level packs then you will find that the odd track looks dodgy and made in 5 minutes, as some of them usually are. Generally what is done to the game works and I can't think of anything to make it better. The controls in this game perplexed me at first. The go and brake buttons were obvious, but to rotate in the air I kept tilting my device instead of using the arrows, which got really annoying. Once you have played around for a while it was easy to use and you slowly master the physics of the game.

The music in this game is nice and enjoyable. The song in the background is great for the game and I am quite happy to listen to it all day. There are SOME sound effects in game, such as people going, "OOooh!" when you crash and other various bike noises. The game can be customized so one sound is louder than the other to fit your preferences. No need to play in silence with this game.

Let me warn you right now, this game is generally Hard and Challenging. Even the standard levels and newbie levels were challenging me to start with, and I can't even begin to say what the other level packs are like. Alot of the time you get frustrated because of that one hard bit, but will keep you trying just to get that feeling of accomplishment. The aim of the game is to collect all of the flags and get to the finish flag. There are no time limits or lives to be lost, but you are racing the time and dieing will send you back to the last saved spot on that level. I found taking your time generally makes the levels easier. The physics in the game are very real, with the great suspension from large jumps and the touchy tilt controls. I have never finished a complete level pack so I have no idea what happens, but from what I have seen playing this is just a game for fun.

This game is so much fun and of course has almost unlimited replayability. This game isn't for those who like easy games that can be completed in an instant. Will provide a huge challenge but the feeling of completion is worth it. One of the best games I have seen on the App Store, very original. If you haven't bought it I strongly recommend that you do.

The Com2Us Collection: Crazy Hotdogs: Tailgate Party

Crazy Hotdogs is a time management game by Com2Us Corp. $1.99

Crazy Hotdogs is one of those games which is making its way into the top spots on the App Store like Sally's Salon, Diner Dash, Chocolate Shop Frenzy and Cooking Mama. These flash games are very popular at the moment and Crazy Hotdogs seems to be the hidden gem in the pack. Not many people would have heard of this game, but it is super addictive and provides quite a challenge. The story behind this game is that a mysterious person challenged you to sell $100,000 worth of hotdogs and you must take up that challenge and find out who issued the challenge. This must be done in one of two modes, mission mode. There are three locations where you can sell hotdogs in mission mode to try and complete the $100,000 challenge. The other mode is Free Mode where you have to try and see how many levels you can last for.

The graphics in this game in my opinion are at a very high standard like the rest of their games. The game is bright and colorful and just works really well for the game. There are ten different customers that come and have their own original needs who all look really good. The actual hotdog making part of the game is pretty basic, but it doesn't really need anything spectacular to look good. The controls in this game are very simple to use and learn, but do turn into a large button mashing contest at times. The controls are that you must tap the hotdogs to flip/pick-up the hotdogs when they have a yellow outline, tap the top part of the screen to serve customers and repeatedly tap the gas button on the left to keep the BBQ going. This last button causes me all the grief as it gets quite annoying to continue pumping, but I actually find that after a while you hardly notice that you are even doing it.

The background in the game is a nice happy theme. I found nothing wrong with it, the only thing I didn't like was the sound that the gas pump made. When pumping the pump to keep the BBQ running it made a horrible sound that, while being realistic, seemed to wreck what the music was doing. I would like to see it improved or at least have something done to it so it is more enjoyable to hear happen, especially if it is a repeated sound.

The game is very fun and will keep you entertained for long periods of time. Mission mode has multiple missions at each location with an increasing difficulty to earn that $100,000. They start off easy earning small amounts like $500 but then you will be playing for long periods of time as the mission requirements increase. The missions aren't a certain win as if you serve the wrong amount of hotdogs, forget customers or serve burnt hotdogs, then the time will start running out and unless you get your game back it will run out. For those who don't want a challenge or just want to practice their hotdog making skills, there is the free mode. This mode lets you just play until you run out of time, which is slowly lost but can be gained when you serve customers. This mode will last you a long time as it takes a while to die.

This game is a heap of fun and provides alot of replay value. It is the most overlooked game of its genre and deserves more sales then it is currently getting. I love playing this game more than Sally's Salon or the other time management games that I own. The game in my opinion needs a new mode or two such as a Time Challenge game to earn as much as you can in a certain time. Alot of addicting fun and I would definitely recommend that you check out the game if you enjoy other games of this genre. For the 60% off price of $1.99 it is great value.

Trapped: Undead Infection is a survival shooter by Com2Us Corp. $1.99

This game is an interesting one for me to review. I haven't seen many good reviews of the game, one example is was a 1 by Slide to Play. Being at $1.99 I find that it is a very fair price for what is available to do in the game, but for sure there are some elements which I can see that would turn off reviewers and gamers alike. I will talk more about these negatives later on but now for some fun parts of this game. It is basically a horror survival shooter where you are a scientist trapped in a large lab of some kind full of undead zombies. While you progress through the game you slowly regain your memory and learn about what is happening. The storyline in this game is very well implemented, which I didn't expect. I was thinking of your basic shoot and get a high score game.

For $1.99 what would you expect in the graphics department? Usually not anything near a premium game. This game, while the principal of every screen is pretty basic, has nice graphics that convey the spooky dark lab rooms that you would expect. The one slight winge I have about the graphics and motion in the game is that your scientist looks like he has been built on the walk of the zombies and seems like one himself. I reckon he should walk like a normal person and not so hunch-backed. We now come to the one really bad thing that may turn you off this game, the controls. The touchpad controls in an iDevice game either work well or they don't, and sadly these don't for me. While are enough to use with ease it is the way they are used which I don't like. You can only use one button at a time, so walking away from zombies and shooting makes it basically impossible. When there are two or more zombies coming towards you I think most of you agree that you want to shoot like crazy. No matter how much button mashing that goes on the weapons you use will shoot or be used then have a pause before working again. This is fine as it keeps one zombie at bay but multiple zombies means there is a strong likelihood of death. One last thing that I can think of is that the arrows get really annoying to use when finding exactly where you must be to shoot at a zombie and controls like in iDracula or Hero & Sparta may work better in situations like this.

The sound in Trapped:UD really sets the tone for the game. Even from the opening movie does the spooky setting come out. As said on the iTunes information page, "with spooky sound effects and an intense atmosphere," it is true to its word and is one of the spookiest games I have played on the iDevice. Only probably Soul Trapper and The Hysteria Project top Trapped on the Spookiness Table.

Overlooking the controls and you find a fun game to play. There is hours of freaky fun to be had. The aim of the game is to walk around corridors going into rooms to try and find a way to escape. Many things need to be done to continue such as finding keys to get past locked doors. In some places you can find guns and ammo to protect you from the zombies and in other you can find zombies to actually escape from. The zombies don't die in their first hit and as said above are quite hard to kill when fighting multiple zombies. There are many different weapons available for use in the game. One of the in game options to look at is a detailed map which shows you where you are and where you have to get to if you want to escape. As you progress further into the game it becomes more challenging, as expected, and challenges those which have mastered the game.

This is a very original game that I believe there should be more of in the App Store. There is alot in this game and but I don't know if you would want to replay this game. Sadly the controls bring down how much we liked the game, but I still think it is better than some reviews I have read, judging it like a $5 game. If I was you I would suggest at least reading some reviews left on the iTunes page and then decide if it is right for you. I just really hope that the controls can be improved for a more enjoyable playing experience.

The Com2Us Collection: Chronicles of Inotia: Legend of Feanor

Author: iPhone Reviews // Category:

Chronicles of Inotia: Legend of Feanor is a RPG game by Com2Us Corp. $7.99

Chronicles of Inotia is everything I expect in a good RPG. It has quests, levels, multiple worlds, great graphics, lots of challenges and alot of grinding. This last point is an interesting one as some people buy RPG's like this and hate it, but it is 90% of the challenge and 90% of the gameplay. If there was no grinding in games like this they would be over in 30 minutes and you would feel like you wasted that $8. With only a handful of RPG's on the App Store, this one is the only RPG over the $5 price range. Gladly it deserves its price and is easily the best looking and playing RPG out there.

In the graphics department this game could easily sell for $50 or so on consoles like the Nintendo DS. The worlds and creatures are very detailed and easily the best looking ones I have seen for a RPG in the App Store. Instead of the usual feel of just moving a picture around the screen, Chronicles of Inotia adds animation to everything that happens, even if the character is standing still. The controls are easy to use but sometimes lack to get you into playing the game. You tap on the screen where you want to move to and/or pick up items and tap on a enemy to attack them. Apart from the four special skills the attacking is automatic, and earlier on the game seems like a bit bore when you can't actually do anything. The controls, however are an excellent idea and are a great option instead of an in game touch pad.

The game has a full soundtrack that differs for every world that you go into. Each world has a different themed music track that I found gets darker and darker as you go into the game. I love variety in games, especially if you will be playing it for over 10 hours! Great idea multiple music tracks is.

The game is as mentioned above, a true RPG. What I expected from this game was fighting, levelling up, complete a quest then repeat it all over again. To be honest I am a sucker for RPG's, owning Vay, Dungeon & Hero, Perilar and this on the iDevice and countless more on the PC and GBA. This game completes the feel of a console RPG with 20+ hours of fun to be had in two difficulty levels. A believeable storyline is in place during the whole game, which makes you feel like you actually achieved something when you found the Wizard in the Forest. What I like most about this game is that there is a place in the game for everyone. New players can start on easy and find a nice challenge while experts can do the same on hard. There are quests you must do to advance in the game to finish and get more quests. These aren't handed on a platter to you either, some quests involve you to search around just to find the person who is going to give you the quest. The quests are interesting and usually involve levelling up once or twice to be able to complete it. Each world is available for you to go to at anytime, but as you progress further the enemies get stronger and it is recommended to level up beforehands. Dropped items such as swords and potions can be found on most worlds either randomly or by being dropped by killed enemies. These can be sold by in tents on each world with traders or used.

This game is a heap of fun but I find that it would only appeal to a certain type of gamer. Those who enjoy grinding games and RPG styled adventures, then this will be a great game for you. If you aren't sure whether you are interested in RPG's then I recommend that you buy one of the cheaper RPG's. I really enjoyed this game and in my opinion this game is worth alot more. Seriously consider checking this game out, you won't regret buying it!

TouchGrind

Author: iPhone Reviews // Category:

TouchGrind is a skating game by Illusion Labs. $4.99

Just in time for the release of Illusion Labs brand new game, Sway, is our review of their premier game TouchGrind. This is by the opinion of someone who is not an avid skater, as I prefer sticking to water sports. I am pleased to say that this didn't impact on the amount of pleasure I had playing this game. Looking at trailers showing people using their fingers as feet on the board, I thought that there was no way it would work, it would be impossible to do. Picking this up and playing the warm up for the first time changed my opinion immediately. This game is pushing the boundaries in what the touch screen can do, with Sway supposedly pushing past those boundaries. There are three modes to play as well as a very good tutorial showing you how to do different tricks and moves.

This game is superb graphics wise. I tried to find one flaw in it and after alot of playing I am yet to find one. The graphics are very realistic and make you feel like you are actually skating. There are skating games on the consoles and PC which I believe don't have graphics better than this. The controls in the game just frighten me with how good they are. How the game manages to tell that halfway through a difficult spin that you place your fingers back on the board to force the board back to the ground is unbelievable. Every trick responds right away to your finger movements and each trick has its own finger movement. I will go into detail later on about the tricks. The best thing about the controls is that if you choose to replay your run it shows where you fingers were on the board and possibly why you didn't pull off that massive front flip.

There isn't much sound put into this game. But then again, it is a skating game. Everything that is needed in this game is implemented. Sound of doing tricks, rails, skating and such are there. They are detailed and sound real, not using any of the fake sounds used in other games. Generally the sounds are in sync with what is going on, but on the odd occasion a sound may come a fraction of a second late. I like to play this game without your own music on, the sound effects are good enough for me.

If all that isn't enough there is a game involved as well! There are three different modes to play around with. Warm Up lets you roam around with no scores or time limits involved. This is a great way to start out and get used to the tricks as well as to get familiar with the course. The Jam Session is a halfway point between the Competition and Warm Up. While there is no time to compete against, there is scoring for each individual trick. The aim of this mode is to get the highest score possible on a single trick. I see this as a way to master your skills before moving onto the competition. Competition is where all the action happens. You have 100 seconds to get as many points as possible. Every score over 10,000 increases your multiplier by 2x up to a max of 8x. If you crash it goes down to 0 and you must try to get it up again. Each of the 12 boards available to use must be unlocked by getting a certain score on Competition, with each board having its own attributes (The harder the board is to unlock, the better it is generally). The excellent physics in this game let you pull off tricks like ollies, shuvits, kickflips, heelflips, impossibles, 5-0, 50-50, crooks, smithgrinds, boardslides, tailslides, darkslides etc in endless combinations to score huge points.

An amazing game and blows all other wannabe skating game out of the water. It is very easy to see how it has been one of the top selling games for many months. Hard core skaters will love how realistic this game is and the game will still be addictive for those who can't tell the difference between a kickflip and railslide. While I would like to see more arenas to play around with and dare I say it, more boards, it is superb and definitely a must buy. You won't regret it!

Smack Boxing

Author: iPhone Reviews // Category:

Smack Boxing is a boxing game by Full Control APS. $0.99

This was an interesting one for me to review as previously played Iron Fist Boxing, it was hard not to compare the two. So I focus on what Smack Boxing is about I will quickly compare the two. Iron Fist is more superior in graphics but I believe the gameplay in Smack Boxing is better. Smack Boxing is a very fun boxing game that uses the touch screen capabilities quite well to convey the game. Recently a major update was released that easily increased how fun this game was, adding things to actually do instead of a quick arcade style fight. It is at the time of review at the sale price of $0.99 and alot of fun for that price.

Graphics wise this is a fine game. It strays away from the realistic feel and brings some cartoon action to the iPhone. There is nothing wrong with the graphics, as the opponents and background look quite good. There is one small area which I would like to see improved, and this is the main character. While all the opponents are detailed and have some theme to them, the main guy you fight with it as basic as it comes and doesn't look good compared to the others. I would like to be able to maybe choose a character to fight with out of ones I have defeated, from a group of 5 or so characters or a editor option. Apart from that it is fine. The controls in the game are fine and use the touch screen very well. You tilt to move and tap to punch, swipe upwards to uppercut and sideways to round arm. Sometimes I found the uppercut and round arm to be a bit slow to respond and didn't use them much, but quite good.

The sound is everything I expected for a boxing game. It has cheering in the background by the crowd and comical hitting sounds when those hits connect with the opponent, or sometimes vice versa. I'm happy with the sound and will quite easily play this game with the sound turned on. I don't get to do that often.

The game got a heap better after the recent 2.0 update. There is now training, which is basically telling you how to play the game, and career mode. Career mode gives you four difficulty levels or fighters with 3 tiers on each level. So many fights must be won in a tier before the next one is unlocked and the last tier unlocks the next level. The matches get alot harder in the upper levels but don't be fooled by that, any person can be played at any time as just a quick match. It was a great way to turn two modes into one. The controls as said before are easier enough to get used to. Tap on the left or right side of the screen to punch with that hand, swipe to do special punches and hold two fingers to block. The objective of every match is to make the opponent lose all their health and either K.O by staying down for the 10 count, or by being knocked out three times. You have a stamina bar that stops you from running away from your opponent all day. Each match is quick and is easy to whip out while waiting for the bus or something similar.

This is a very entertaining game that packs alot of punch. With stats against individual players to try and get a good record and the many levels or competition, this game will last you a while. Great for a quick game session or to see if you can complete the whole game in one go. At the sale price of $0.99 I believe that this is the best boxing game for its price and is worth a look. Download the lite version first to see if it is the right game for you!

Electrocute is an arcade game by Full Control APS. $1.99

To be honest my initial reaction to an arcade game like this was somewhere along of lines of, "Ugh!" I then played three levels and my opinion was completely changed. This game is really addictive and provides a great challenge which incorporates the multi touch system of the iDevices to perfection. In blatant terms the game is basically save the sheep from the evil UFO's. How do you do that I hear you ask? Well simple. Touch the screen with two fingers and between them a lightning bolt appears that kills anything that it hits, including sheep. As well as multiple power ups and farmers that help you, this game packs alot of punch.

The graphics in this game is brilliant. While saying that there are only three different UFO's, power-ups and some sheep, but these are all made perfectly. The background gives it a great feel. Nothing graphics wise is made poorly and each individual item on the screen looks amazing. Only one background is used in the entire game as no more in my opinion are needed, it fits the theme. The controls are so easy to use and simple to pick up. One touch to use a power-up and two fingers held on the screen to create the lightning. Nothing else is needed and makes for a great, quick and easy game.

The sound works really well with the game. An eerie background music is played that you would expect on children's horror films. It is the wind blowing at the dead of night. Nothing else is really used in Electrocute but as with the graphics, nothing else is needed.

The game is very fun to play and you can quite easily get addicted to it, but there is a downside. I found that after periods of 30 minutes or more that it got quite repetitive, especially in the harder levels. The only game mode forces you to progress through as many levels by destroying all UFO's as you can before losing all your lives. As you get further into the game it gets more difficult with more UFO's and more sheep to avoid. If the UFO's get a chance they will suck the sheep into them, but they can be stopped by a simple touch on the UFO. There is a time on each level that if completed in that time you get so many points as a bonus.

As much fun as this is, with no other game modes to play around with, this sadly won't keep you repeatedly coming back over and over again. Maybe an endless mode where the UFO's keep regenerating at a certain time may spice up the game. Very polished and a great arcade game, not for those who need alot of variety. $1.99 is a great price, I would recommend at least taking a look at it to see if it is for you.
I found the experience of playing quite Electrifying! (Bad Pun I know ;)

Rate My Kiss is a valentine app by Creative Coefficient Corp. $0.99

The main purpose of your app is to improve your kissing. While the best practice is on real people, this app simulates it quite well. This app gives you a heap of different lips to practice on with surprisingly, difficulty levels! You get rated on each kiss out of five by how well your lips go onto the lips of the other persons. The difficulty levels just makes it so that you have to be more accurate to get that 5/5. While it sounds easy enough to do, getting your lips in the right place is quite hard with all the different shaped lips and a flat surface. There aren't many ways you can make an app to practice kissing, this is one of the best ways that I can think of doing it.

This app has a great layout and is very easy to use for the first time. There are many different options available both male and female for the lips. The settings can make the kiss go that little bit quicker with a 5 sec or no countdown what so ever. There is an ability to have a name on the lips to make it that little bit more personal. The kiss itself it executed quite well. After the countdown, if you have one, you kiss the screen and your lips are shown on the screen. Be warned it is a pair of pre-made lips and not your own, but they go exactly in the position of yours. There is no need for a how to button as this game is bright and easy to use

My opinion is that this is an app which will make the most mature person giggle at the thought of kissing their phone. That thought soon goes away when after hours of practice kissing that one girl on the smoking level until you get a 5/5, you show her and get to test it out in real life. If you have a screen protector I suggest using that, as the screen will get quite dirty. If not a cleaning cloth will do. One recomendation I have for you is not to use your tongue, the screen doesn't like slobber. A hilarious app, alot of fun, hope it brings you something special this valentines day!

GL Golf

GL Golf is a golf game by Nuclear Nova Software. $5.99

I really enjoyed this game as a golf simulation, which provided a realistic shots and ball movement. The first thing that got me interested in the lite version was that there was no person holding the club, which so far on the app store golf games have made them a real turn off. There are 6 challenging 18 hole golf courses to play around on in three difficulty modes which will really test how good you are. The deluxe version for just $4 more has a staggering 22 courses.

The graphics in this game were recently improved in an update and makes the game look alot better than it was. With the amount of courses they can be forgiven as they do what is needed by showing difference between the fairway, rough, green, bunker and lake. The controls in this game are easy enough to use with a swing button and dragging your finger vertically to change clubs and horizontally to change direction of the shot.

There is no in game music in the game, just sound effects of hitting the ball, landing in the water etc. Your own music is available to play which is fine.

Each course is available to play with either the first 9, back 9 or the full 18 holes. Realistic options available to professional golfers are now available for you to use. The ability to draw, fade, loft and punch the ball as well as the amount of backspin you want. The courses have varying lengths on each hole with alot of challenging holes. There is an online leaderboard to keep you wanting to improve. Good scores are possible, on rare occasions I have gotten a double eagle which is so hard to do. The difficulty levels add a new challenge to the game. Starting on easy getting pars and birdies it will get you thinking that this game is quite easy. As you change the difficulty you find yourself manually changing the club for the right length and having no idea where the ball will go exactly. Each difficulty has its own high score list.

This game is the best golfing game on the app store to date, the amount to play around with is amazing. For serious golf buffs I strongly suggest you to get the deluxe version with 4 times as many courses. If you aren't sure if you will like it I suggest the lite version first. Excellent game, really enjoyed it.

Textropolis is a word game by Ian Marsh. $2.99

Textropolis is a game which has a huge heap of content to keep you coming back for weeks. This fun game lets you create as many words as possible from the 30 nine letters long cities. The cities have a long list of words to find, ranging from 90 to 400 odd words. The competition heats up with the game allowing you to have multiple accounts for family rivalry. The addictive gameplay has no time limits so you can relax and take your time crossing off the words.

Textropolis has brilliant graphics which I am disappointed to say don't get viewed as much as they should by myself. As you earn more stars the buildings on the top of the screen start to grow and more people start to walk across the screen. These are polished and each city has original city landmarks. The controls are very easy to use in the game. When making words you tap on the wanted letters. If you make a word the submit button will go then be available to click. This is a great way in my opinion to make the game, saving people from being frustrated when they submit a word and it says it is wrong.

There is very little in the way of sound effects or music in the click. Effects are made when clicking on the letters, but apart from that there i nothing. Your own music is available to use while playing the game instead.

The fun and addictive game has so much to do in it and the way it is done really makes the game what it is. With the basic principal of make words out of other words, this game really delivers it in a great way. To aim is to find all the words words with four or more letters in them out of the letters in the cities. The way to unlock each new city is to complete 10% of the words (One silver star) in the city before it and there are 10 stars to complete in each city. For a person with a large vocabulary, they should find 60% of the words easily but then the final 40% can either be guessed or more thought to figure them out can be put in. If you really get stuck shaking the iDevice will ask you if you would like a hint at the cost of 1,000 of your population. Population is increased for every word you find, and is really the only way to compare how far you have gone with others. The hints will bring the plane across the screen with the first letter of the word and a definition to help you. If you come across a word that you didn't know it will give a definition of the word, this is a great way to learn while having fun!

The amount of value you get for the price is amazing. $2.99 for days and days of use isn't bad work. I would recommend this to anyone, this is the best word game I have seen to date on the iPhone. After just a few minutes playing it will have you saying, "This is Amazing! Amazing: To affect with great wonder; astonish." Top Notch game Ian!

Lux Dlx

Author: iPhone Reviews // Category:

Lux Dlx is a risk game by Sillysoft Games. $7.99

Lux Dlx is the complete version of the free game, Lux Touch. While Lux Touch only featured the classic map and one level of difficulty, Lux Dlx features over 550 downloadable maps as well as the ability to change difficulty levels of every AI to a different level if it is what you want. The amount of options in this game really spoils you for choice as a majority of the maps require alot of thought for those who have a strategy downpacked to beat the classic map on Lux Touch. A few of the maps are already included in the game but a majority have to be downloaded in game. I am disappointed with this as they have to be downloaded individually and each one takes quite a bit of time to download, which is understandable but with an upcoming update in March it says about faster speed, maybe for the downloads as well as in game.

The graphics in this game are nice and bright with good graphics to look at. The maps haven't just been made to look good on the map itself but also they include a nice scenery on the outside that fits the theme of whatever map you are currently playing. The controls are easy to use and first timers can figure out what to do without reading the rules. When selecting a place to attack with it shows with arrows which enemies can be attacked from that spot.

There is no in game music, just optional sound effects which is nothing to write home about. They are mainly just noises when adding troops or attacking. They can be turned off and your own music is allowed, which I prefer to do.

The gameplay will be familiar to anyone who has played Risk. You must destroy the enemies and take over the whole map. Controlling areas and getting so many gamecards will give you more troops to fight with. Areas are taken over by destroying all of the opponents pieces on that area, this is done easily if you have more troops on the area that you choose to attack with. Variants regarding the AI or opponents are available to play around with on every map. Up to six players are allowed to be on a map. They can be anything from one human and 5 AI to 6 humans battling against themselves. If you like head to head you are available to have human v human or human v AI. Each of the maps are generally themed on wars or areas of the real world, such as the Iraq War, but some are in fantasy lands. The larger maps take a while to load up before you can play them, but the coming update should decrease the waiting time. There are no achievements to get as this game is just to play for fun.

This game is great fun and provides alot of replay value, it is quite a challenge to win one of these maps on easy, let alone all 50! There is an update coming in March with faster speeds, more maps and an extra hard difficulty available for the AI. This is a great game to play either by yourself or for fame and glory against your fiends. Provides a challenge and is great for fans of Risk. If you aren't sure if you would like the game try Lux Touch and then make your decision.

1112 Ep. 01

1112 Ep.01 is a click and search game by Aghartha Studios. $7.99

If you want my opinion of this game in three words, here it is: I Love It. I absolutely love this game so much, this easily can take up to 10 hours to complete the game. 1112 (as I found out watching the AppVee video is pronounced eleven twelve) is a game similar to I Spy where you must find or complete tasks to find out what the next one it, except it follows a storyline with a great sense of humor. Everything in the game was hand drawn which impresses me alot, doing art my whole way through school I know how hard it is. This is the first or six episodes, with all coming episodes at half price, if they have the same amount of content I can't wait.

As said above every single image seen in the game was made by a hand drawn image. This means that there are about 15-20 fully furnished and highly detailed rooms and areas as well as an intro and ending video. These are superbly done and have had alot of dedication put into them. Only one other game that I have seen has this sort of dedication in it. The game is fully interactive and almost everything has an option or two associated with it. While 95% of the time none of these will be refused by Louis Everett, the main character, no matter how much you want to burn the curtains. I would like to see in future episodes that the interactive part of this game becomes more positive and allows more choices. The controls are easy to use but I would recommend you read everything in the help section before starting the game to get a good grip on how to play.

The sound primarily only sound effects. They are quite good and alot of thought has gone into them. The one thing which disappointed me about this was that there was no Voice Acting. I can understand why as with hundreds of choices it would take up to much space to make. The sound effects in the intro movie especially gives it the dark and spooky feel.

The gameplay is very challenging. While there are no objectives the obvious hints are given from other characters about what to do. Some of the hints about what to do aren't very good and can confuse you. One example of that was when I have to look for a book in the bathroom for a code but it ends up being on the mirror when the tap is turned on. Apart from that what you need to do to complete each part requires alot of testing out every option and in the end when you find it a sense of relief flows over you, giving you confidence to try and find the next thing. There are walkthroughs out on the internet which will help you complete the game, I do not recommend using them as it turns this game into an instant disappointment. The game for me is a big hit as of its challenges and the amount of value you get out of the many hours taking to complete it. After finishing it once I went though using a walkthrough and in 15-30 minutes the game was over.

For me this is an awesome game which will keep me coming back to see what happens to our favorite Louis Everett. For parents who don't want to show their children drug and sexual references and swearing, I would play this game after the kiddies are asleep. Some reviews haven't showed that they enjoyed this game much while I really enjoyed it. I suggest trying the lite version to see if it fits your personality, but for me it is worth every cent. The dedication put into this game is evident.

Air Hockey

Air Hockey is a sport game by Acceleroto. $0.99

There are alot of Air Hockey games on the App Store, all fighting to be the best one. I am happy to say that this is the best out of 3 or 4 Air Hockey games that I have played. With 1 player mode ranging from Kiddie difficulty to Insane difficulty and 2 player mode, this game is alot of fun. Each mode has the option of original gameplay with 1 puck or the extra challenging game with two pucks! This game is the most realistic air hockey game so far.

The game has awesome bright, polished graphics. Everything is done to perfection with its great design and easy use. The controls work really well. Bryan says on its description that the pucks have been made just the right size for use, and they have. The great physics in this game make it feel just like you are down at the local arcade.

The sounds in this game sound very well done. They go well with the game and again give the game a realistic feel. For those weird few who wouldn't like the sound effects, your own music can be played and sound effects can be turned off.

The game is very easy to get to. Everytime you start up the app it asks you for 1 or 2 player, if 1 player then your difficulty level then 1 or 2 pucks. The first time I played this game, I found an incentive to keep playing was to see how many tables were available to play on, as each game will change the color of the table. This game is great for the whole family with the different difficulty levels. Kiddie mode lets the player win easily. The opposite end of the table is Insane, which is fast paced action for the pros. This game is easy to play in 2 player mode and gives alot of competition within friends. The puck physics make the puck bounce off the sides of the screen just like in real life.

This game as you have probably read for the last four paragraphs is very good and is far superior to any other air hockey game. A lite version was recently released so those who are a bit skeptical about if the game is any good or want to try before they buy can. I have to congratulate Acceleroto on the game, I love it and still play it everyday.

Imangi Word Squares

Imangi Word Squares is a word game by Imangi Studios. $0.99

Imangi Word Squares is another entertaining word game by Imangi Studios. Like how Imangi had a similar style of play to the Rubik's Cube, I believe that Word Squares is the Sudoku of Word Games. Basically there are four levels available to play with different size grids, 3x3 -> 6x6. There are pre-placed letters and and movable letters which must be moved to make words. More about that later. This game is very well done and provides alot of fun, a great idea for a game.

As with Imangi, the type of game doesn't really ask for many graphics, but what it has works for the game and looks nice. The controls are easy to use with a dragging motion to switch where the letters are. When you lock in a letter it turns white like the pre-placed letters but are smaller to show which ones can be moved if needed.

There is no in-game music, just sound effects. Your own music is able to be played instead, which is fine.

The gameplay is quite fun and great for a quick five minute game. There are no difficulty levels, but the larger the grids, the harder the game is. All grids except 6x6 have different words on both axis so you have to make sure that the letters fit into both ways. When you get stuck there is the ability to use a hint which puts another letter into the correct place. There are no other game modes so for me this can't be played for longer than 10-15 minutes at a time.

This is a quite good game, based on a simple principal that will give you alot of entertainment. Great for a short challenge but without more game modes or a timed mode this won't be used that much. A good word game and at a great price of $0.99. Try the lite version first and see what you think beforehand.

Imangi

Imangi is a word game by Imangi Studios. $1.99

Imangi is a fun game that will make you think and challenge your mind. For me I think that this is the Rubiks cube of word games. Basically the game forces you to drag rows of letters horizontally and vertically to create as many words as you can. This may sound simple but provides quite a challenge. There are four game modes to play, with only one of these being a timed challenge. Even when you are moving the pieces around the screen the game doesn't give away what words are made, stopping people take the easy way out.

There isn't much needed in the way of the graphics apartment but it looks nice and polished for what is there. The controls are easy to use and when moving the rows there are no problems. When selecting words it takes a little while before it says that it is a word, if it is. I would like to see a quicker response by the game.

There is no in-game music, just sound effects of moving the rows etc. Instead the game allows you to listen to your own music, which is fine.

I will talk about all four game modes in here. In classic you start with a randomly generated list of letters and you must make as many words as possible. This is quite a challenge as like a Rubik's cube, if you move the pieces around they won't match so words have to be kept together. There is no time limit so you can take as long as possible and click submit when you don't believe you can get any better. Challenge mode gives you three minutes to make as many words as possible. When you make a word you can press submit to remove the words and get more letters. Daily Challenge pits you against everyone else for that day on the same grid to see if you can get a high score. I love that as well as the online leaderboard that this will bring competition among people. Friend Challenge is a variety of the Daily Challenge where you put in a code and try to beat a friends score. On all these there are so many letters which have a red circle meaning that they give double points.

This game is great to pick up and play straight away, but be warned that you might be there an hour later still trying to improve your score. There are alot of word games on the app store, and this one is right up there with the best. A great game that I would recommend you check out.

Perilar

Author: iPhone Reviews // Category:

Perilar is a Tactical Strategy game by Mark Damon Hughes. $4.99

I am a big fan of RPG's so I was interested to see how it matched up to my expectations. Perilar is a challenging old school RPG set in a magical kingdom. The goal in the game is to save the kingdom from the evil monsters that were set into the grounds. There is only one difficulty level but don't be fooled with that as if you stray too far without leveling up you will die and have to restart where you last saved, if you have before you can say Ouch!

The graphics give the old school feel with simple 2D graphics which we used to find on games in the 1980's. While my preference is great detailed graphics, I can put up with graphics like this when it is from the era the type of game was originally created in. The controls are simple but I believe that they could be better. You tap in the direction you want to go and tap in the direction of the enemy if they are right next to you to attack. I would prefer an attack button in a corner of the screen which would make it easier.

The sound in the game is alright. There is no in game music but the sound effects of fighting and the characters voice is alright. Personally there is nothing to get excited with, I would really like to see some type of music in the game though which will be getting added in the next update.

The gameplay provides quite a challenge. The game is basically a try to survive as long as possible game. As you win more fights and get more experience you get more health, strength and money to buy potions and such from the main town. When you die the game is over and your score goes onto the high scores list, unless you previously saved the game and you can then restart from where you saved. Starting the game is really hard as it is very easy to die and this may turn people off liking this game. I don't really know what to think about this game as it is different to other RPG's on the App Store such as Dungeon & Hero.

This game to me is more of an arcade game of survival. Not being around in the early 1980's means that I don't think I appreciate how fun this game is but I really got some enjoyment out of this at times. For those who may be turned off at the lite version from how hard it is and were wishing for something easier, once you level up a bit it will improve. This game is great for those who are looking for a RPG style challenge as no other games that I have seen are like this. For me I believe it should maybe have a lower price like $2.99 to get more sales with Dungeon & Hero at the same price as it currently is. I suggest testing out the lite version and if you enjoy it buy this game. Mark Damon Hughes is listening to what his buyers say and making the app as good as possible, with the price drop and some small things fixed would make this a far better game.

Whack 'Em All

Author: iPhone Reviews // Category:

Whack 'Em All is a targeting game by Fairlady Media. $0.99/Free

This game has a story to how it became free. When Fairlady Media heard that Whack 'Em All had been jailbroken they decided to respond to the people who did it by making a free, ad supported version. This is a very fun game which makes you focus on every small corner of the screen. There are nine levels of gameplay to try and complete, but there are no difficulty levels as they gradually get harder as you progress. There are six different characters which have their own personality which is a great change from Whack 'Em All games with exactly the same characters.

The graphics are very polished and have a nice cartoon feel. They are very well done with bright colors and no sight of being pixelatted anywhere in the game. Each level has a change of background, each looking as good as the one before. The controls in the game are responsive and easy to use. When tapping on the screen or shaking it for the mass whacking happens straight away and doesn't have any glitches what so ever.

The sound in the game reminds me of being on a farm. It is very easy to listen to and fits the theme of the game quite well. One downside that I found in the sound effects when you whack the moles is that they send out a small squeal almost. I would like to see this changed to a better sound as for me it didn't really fit in with the game. Other than that it is ultimately pretty good.

The tutorial that pops up the first time you play the game is so simple and explains the game really well. It doesn't take long for the game to get underway and is really simple to play. Tap or shake moles to earn points and avoid the cats. This game really challenges your sight as with the ground being brown you sometimes don't see the moles which pop up in the corners so I find my eyes going around in circles to find them all. This game is fast paced with its climbing difficulty as you progress through the levels. I would like to see that if you have to quit the game for whatever reason then that you have a chance to resume where you left or to start a new game.

This is a great pick up and play game that doesn't take long to play but will keep you coming back time and time again. The ads in this game are suttle and appear only between the levels. Great game to get if you want to challenge your sight and reflexes. Be sure to get the free game or if you can I would support the developer and buy the ad free version for $0.99.

Crazy Tanks

Author: iPhone Reviews // Category:

iTunes Link

Crazy Tanks is a shooting game by Bootant. $0.99

I have played quite a few of Bootant's games and this is my favorite by far. Bootant is essentially a full on war inside an arena. For each of the 30 levels there are a number of tanks and towers which you must track down using the map down the bottom right hand corner and kill them. They will also shoot at you and if you lose health it takes you back to the start, but the tanks already destroyed, stay destroyed. I will talk more about the gameplay later on. This game is addictive fun and I can see why it got to the No.1 game on the App Store.

The graphics in this game as so good for a $0.99 game. With all that is going on, it is a top notch effort. All games which involve driving I see are particularly hard to make look good and bootant has pulled it off. The physics in the game are very realistic. When bumping into walls or other tanks you can see your tank bounce off them. The controls are easy to use with the tilting each way to control the movement of the tank and touching anywhere on the screen to shoot.

The sound in this game really gives it the fun factor. The lighthearted sounds that come from a cannon is fired, when a tank is destroyed and when you health gets into the red zone just crack me up. I love this game with the music on as it has a nice easy going feel to take away all the pressure.

The gameplay is so fun and addictive, I have completed all 30 levels countless times. This game is one to enjoy the visual experience as well as the gameplay as there are no points, no time limit, just to destroy all the enemies on that level. There are power-ups scattered around the arena that give you more health and special weapons. When you run out of health you are sent to the start of the level but all tanks already destroyed stay destroyed, I like this as some levels would be really hard to complete without dying once. Every 10 levels are split into stages and you get a trophy for completing that stage. The latest version added a stats page for something to achieve showing tanks destroyed, number of kills etc. There are three difficulty levels which will keep you challenged for a while

This is a super game which is great for anyone to play. Very easy to pick up and play for just a few levels or try and complete all 30 levels. Bootant are very active already adding 9 new levels in its last update and hopefully there are more to come. One thing that I would like to see is a fix where if you fire off alot of shots then every now and then it won't allow you to shoot for a while. Other than that this game is almost perfect. This game is a steal at $0.99, if you don't have it BUY IT NOW!

Superbowl Sunday Special: PocketSports Football

PocketSports Football is a Football game by Solus Games. $4.99

This special fast tracked review is in honor of the Superbowl XLIII between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers. PS Football is the first real football game I have seen on the App Store. This is a very good game by Solus which really delivers NFL to the iPhone. The game has two game modes, quicky and league. Quicky is a quick game where you choose how long the quarters go for, 1, 2 or 3 minutes and your team and the opposition. League mode gives you a full league where you choose which team you will play with and the length of the quarters. Currently league mode only shows the win loss record with ties counting as a loss. I would like to see a full leaderboard in league mode and some achievements or unlockable items such as more teams.

Th graphics are ok for its price. The graphics are a bit pixellated but I'm not complaining as I find the gameplay alot of fun. The game is responsive and the buttons are easy to use. When passing the ball to another player the it is simulated well and if it is done at the wrong time it will be incomplete. Another option that I believe could be changed is that if you get free it is impossible to be caught if you don't stop running. I would like to see certain players that go faster and certain players that go slower to add some variety.

The sound is quite good. Some audio is put into the game to add the stadium feel. I generally found the audio was in sync with the game and wasn't annoying. Again I don't believe sporting games need to worry that much about sound and if you don't enjoy the sound then it is easy to turn it off.

Being originally from Australia I am only just learning all the rules of the NFL and this game was surprisingly easy to play and understand. Even for someone with no football knowledge would easily figure out that you have three goes up running or passing to make it past the next line and if you do you get another three goes. If you can't make it past the fourth go lets you either try again and risk a turnover or punt the ball. While in both offense and defense there are four options for set up and four options of how to play the point. I believe this is a great idea so that you are controlling the whole team and not hoping that they go to a good spot. Touchdowns will give you 7 points. In an update I would like to see maybe 6 points for a touchdown and a chance to kick yourself an extra point.

This is a great game for all NFL fans and even those who are interested in sport but don't have must knowledge of the game will pick this up and be able to play interesting. There are some slight improvements which I believe could be made but it is an excellent start for the first real football game on the iDevice. Great job Solus!

Cartoonizme is a photo editing app by Portegno Apps. $0.99

Cartoonizme is a very entertaining app which I spent hours with photos of my friends to make them a person with a stupid hairstyle and a huge mouth. This app is made to pimp out photos of yourself and your friends. This app and its sister app, Wanted serve this purpose very well and Cartoonizme actually make the pictures look like they are straight out from a cartoon show. Unlike Wanted, there are no words around the outside of the picture, but you can add a speech bubble with writing in it or custom made logos. There are alot of options able to be added to the picture which are all to do with the head so one picture can be reused multiple times to create different finishes.

This app is very well designed and offers alot of choices to play around with. Once you upload the desired picture you have the option to zoom in and out and change to opacity of the picture. Three different base options are available to add onto the picture. These are Facial Elements such as eyes, mouth, noses, wigs and scars. Accessories such as hats, glasses, headbands, christmas themes and new year themed items. Speech items such as speech bubbles and thought bubbles which can have any writing you wish in them. Unlike Wanted I found that the items on this look better when you have a close up picture, Wanted looked fine with a bit more zoomed out picture. Again the items can be zoomed in and out and rotated with ease by using two fingers on the touchscreen.

My opinion on this app is that it is very good to make fun of friends or to entertain yourself with pictures of yourself. I believe this is almost as good as Wanted, I would like to see more items for clothing sand to hold in the hand. This app is good, I would suggest trying the lite version which has less items to use, and if you enjoyed that don't hesitate to buy this. Very enjoyable and has a heap of items to keep you coming back over and over again.
